Getting paid for international remote work: what to check first

Before you accept a foreign client or employer, ask how and when you will be paid. Common options include bank transfer, payment platforms and, for some companies, a local contractor setup.

Compare the fees and exchange rates of each option, because they can differ a lot and eat into your pay. Check which currency the contract uses and who covers transfer costs.

Keep records of every invoice and payment. You may need them for taxes, and tax rules for foreign income differ by country, so look up your local rules or ask an accountant.

Never pay anything to receive a salary, and be careful with anyone who asks you to move money on their behalf.
